On October 23, 2004, TA Frazer of Florence, KY and an AI instructor under Master Ken Smith graciously hosted a 4 hour seminar by Master of Tapi Tapi Ken Smith. In addition to TA Frazer's students, Karen Callahan, Brian Johns, and Scott Bell were also in attendance.
Master Smith covered a variety of Modern Arnis concepts and techniques tailored for the pressure point backgrounds of most of the seminar attendees. Among the topics covered were the single sinawali and its variations and applications. Master Smith kicked off the seminar by introducing the single sinawali movement followed by the two vs. one stick drill which included the left and right sweepstroke entries. Master Smith also, during the course of the seminar, taught the tapi tapi style block off angles #1 and #2. Following the cane applications of the single sinawali drill, he then moved onto the empty hand variations and applications of single sinawali. Among the applications were the high grab and low grab joint locks and using the single sinawali movement to parry punches.
Master Smith also taught the enthusiastic students the empty hand version of the block, check, counter obstruction removal drill, focusing on the slap off on angle #1 and the pull-off on angle #2. He also taught the application of the centerlock in the slap off drill, pointing out the pressure point applications.
Master Smith concluded the seminar by teaching the first basic left vs. right tapi tapi pattern. TA Frazer's students tremendously enjoyed the fun teaching style of Master Smith, who related many funny stories of our beloved Professor complete with his near perfect imitation of Professor's speech patterns.
The day concluded with a hearty meal at a local Mexican restaurant. At this meal, TA Frazer and Master Smith announced that another Modern Arnis seminar would be held in Florence, KY in three months.

I just wanted to comment on the great experience I had at the Arnis seminar offered by Mr Tullis. Mr. Tullis is my instructor. His years of experience help me and other students get the real feeling of what the art should be and how it should be put to work.
I am an A/K amputee (above knee) and Arnis offers great techniques I can execute even with my disability.
I had the opportunity to attend a seminar offered by Mr. Tullis at Master Garza's Martial Arts Academy. I was very pleased with all the knowledge I gained from Mr. Tullis and other high ranked members of IMAF. I am planning to attend the Camp, next February 19-22 and I am sure it will be another great experience for me as a student of Modern Arnis and for everybody who attends.
Thanks, HS

I just wanted to comment on Earl Tullis Seminar on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Al Garza's Martial Arts America.
Guro Tullis blended his skill and unique East Texas humor to provide an enjoyable day of learning for all who attended. I would also like to thank Arnis Black Belts - John Doreck, Mark Koehler, Ed Kwan, Dr. Hume, Al Garza and Tim Born for their assistance with various drills we practiced.
I must thank Dr. Hume’s students for braving rainy weather to make the 3 hour drive from Bryan, TX to League City. I partnered with several of his students and found them helpful in practice of drills as well as being receptive to my ideas as we learned from each other.
Many advanced and first time students attended the seminar. The day was a celebration of our art. From basic striking drills, to Tapi-Tapi, to joint locks, to Ground Techniques, the day was fast paced and enjoyable.
I am very much looking forward to Houston Camp on February 19 - 22 to renew friendships with our out of town guests and meeting new friends.
Ya'll Come,
Denny Shea

Arriving at Islander’s Karate on a windy but beautiful spring day it may have seemed hard to spend the afternoon inside, but not when the day is spent learning from one of the leading masters in Modern Arnis!
! Ken Smith met us inside his warm and yet exciting new school. His was the first of many smiles seen that day as we all trained hard on some traditional arnis, mixed with a variety of Tapi-Tapi drills. The next happy people I met was a husband and wife that are enjoying the learning of arnis together, Gary was excited as he and I moved through the techniques together, working up a sweat, learning new connections and finding new details together.
Master Ken conveyed the spirit of Professor Remy Presas as he passed on the art of Modern Arnis. Included were stories and concepts that Professor Presas had shared with Master Ken and at times it felt as though Professor was in the room with us. Not only were techniques given out to us the eager students, but also the details that can fine-tune one’s learning and transform these body movements into an art form!
The excitement carried over to our next workouts as we reviewed and learned and worked together. Master Ken not only teaches this art but through his sharing and his extension of Professor’s spirit we all are motivated to seek the power and pure fun of Modern Arnis.

"As usual the IMAF, Inc. presented another wonderful camp filled with fresh concepts and ideas. David Ng and his crew did a wonderful job as hosts of the camp. All the instructors did everything they could to continue Professor Presas dream. And I must say the 75-80 degree weather was great too. Thanks to all.

"Camp was a little more intense than I was expecting, but by the end I started to see how it all goes together, even though I will need many more years of practice, I enjoyed the differences in styles from one instructor to another and the one on one pointers, it helped a lot. I had fun.

"I enjoyed the camp very much. I must have trained on & off over a period of time but I couldn't seem to connect a lot of the moves. The repetition and building of one step upon another helped put a lot of things together for me although I will not remember it all. Practice will reinforce what has become a little more clear to me. I was very excited about what I learned. Thank you very much."

"Deny help, fall to have multiple instructors/people who knew what the sequences should look like so that they could come over and correct errors that my partner or I were making. I was very glad that the instructors could be flexible and allow me to participate in only Saturday or Sunday. The only thing that bothered me about the instructions was when the person demonstrating the moves, added extra things on, this was interesting to see what else could be added, but made the instruction a little confusing."

"It was an honor to be invited and participated in the Arnis Fest hosted by IMAF, Inc., Oct 17-20, 2002 in Chicago. The organizers did an outstanding job keeping 60 participants from all parts of the country, different ranks, profession, and expectations. The programs, certificates, brochures, accommodations, food, transport, and above all, the caring for one another and family atmosphere, played an important role during the camp. I salute to the Masters of Tapi-Tapi in their dedication and pure love for GM Remy Presas. It showed in their techniques and presentations. They presented their authority and knowledge of Tapi Tapi wholeheartedly. I felt Prof. is flowing with them the whole time. I have learned a lot and got updated with the new drills, connections, and flow. I got a lot from the seminar. Prof had certainly prepared the Masters of Tapi Tapi to carry on his Legacy and Teachings. I am pleased with the professionalism and commitment of IMAF, Inc. The Board Members and the Gurus. My respect to Dr. Randi Schea for taking Modern Arnis and IMAF, Inc., in a new dimension. I can see a bright future for IMAF and FMA worldwide under his leadership. Mabuhay and more power to the organizers, Board Members and Tap- Tapi Masters, Gurus and students of IMAF, Inc."

We like to thank all the Masters of Tapi-Tapi for the excellent instruction. We would also like to thank all the Black Belts for helping us through to learn the new material and improve our techniques. Having an experienced person to practice with and guide you through a new move is can never be replaced by a video or learning on your own."

"Having attended the past two camps in Cromwell and Chicago, I am pleased to say I was very happy with the results I've obtained from the teachings of the Masters of Tapi-Tapi at these camps for myself and my students. Starting with strong basics, important and direct; emphasis on traditional backgrounds from which this art was derived, to the complexities of the flow and counter for counter practices, having something for everyone at every stage of experience to learn from. My hat goes off to you. I was equally impressed with their genuine concern for all the attending groups' needs. Datu Shishir Inocallas' presents and teachings together with the others only helped solidify the depth of the art we practice. To him we give great thanks. It is with this respect, I recommend to anyone involved with Modern Arnis or wishes to learn Modern Arnis, to attend one of these IMAF Inc. camps or seminars and see for yourselves the quality this! group has to offer. To all the people I have trained with in the circle of Modern Arnis, I hope to see you all again soon at future training events. Excellent camps! To everyone involved, keep up the good work!"

"I would like to thank our entire Arnis family for a wonderful weekend at the Chicago Camp. Everyone, from Master Ken and Tammy Smith, who organized the event, to the “first-time” members of our family contributed to the perfect atmosphere. The training offered an ideal balance of intensity and fun and the Saturday night banquet was a fitting tribute to the unity we all felt.
Masters Randi, Ken, Brian, Jim and Chuck were, as always, a wellspring of information; information presented in such a way as to benefit all levels of Arnis players. And if that were not enough, Datu Shishir Innocalla was present to take us back to our Filipino roots. Thank you, Datu, for your energy and good humor.
Finally, my thanks to all of the behind-the-scenes people, too numerous to mention, who made it all happen. Hope to see you all in Houston."

These are masters that I look forward to learning from for quite some time! The family atmosphere was pleasant and it also added another degree of fun to the intense workouts. The dinner was a treat; to share with one another, a little more of ourselves, while learning about those around you made the family atmosphere really stand out. I could feel Professor's smile on all of us!"

"I really enjoyed the Arnis Fest and want to thank Ken and Tammy for hosting such a great camp.
Things I enjoyed:
1) Masters making the point of illustrating techniques from Abanico Corto, Palis-Palis and other striking patterns are inter-changeable, just different ways to get to the same result.
2) Nice dinner together so people can get to know each other better.
3) Separating the junior and upper belts so we can learn at the appropriate level.
Things if I may suggest:
1) Each master has a planned session, outline what techniques to show and have pre-selected set of trainers to work with rest of people. Train the trainer, as overall skill of Arnis people rises, detail of each technique is important. Is hard to grasp the detail if two people have never seen the technique before.
2) Have a session for people to sign up and rotate thru everybody to play tapi-tapi with each other."

Cromwell CT Camp Aug 22 - Aug 25 2002
Ron Jursch, Newington, CT
"I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to everyone who participated in the Cromwell summer camp sponsored by Master Brian Zawilinski. It was truly a learning and rewarding experience made possible by a gathering of the Arnis family of Professor Remy Presas.
For me, it was a rejuvenation of something that I was afraid that I was losing. Prior to the camp I was having some difficulties in my personal life that were sending my Arnis training into a downward spiral. I was demoralized and very unmotivated. I wanted in the worst way not to have to engage in the intensity of the camp. But out of loyalty to the 'family' of my Arnis school and a deep-seated respect to the legacy of the professor, I went.
Talk about a booster shot! WOW!!! How can I not feel recharged after working with Masters Schea, Smith, Ladis, and Zawilinski. Not only did I learn alot (besides FOOTWORK, FOOTWORK, and PUNISH HIM!) but my limited skills were nurtured with patience and a lot of good humor by the masters and everyone that I worked with. From the newest student to the highest levels of achievement there were no attitudes. There was just the fun and excitement of learning more about 'The Flow' and of the art that the Professor devoted his life to. I could hear the words of the Professor echo through the voices of the masters, "Can you do this? Let me see!" From the calming patience of Guro Karen and my 'uki' Jeff who guided a very under confident and anxious student through testing to the personal side of the masters and others who shared their personal experiences of the Professor with us all.
It was all very exciting and rewarding. This may sound a bit corny but I believe it to be quite true: The real treasures in life do not come from how many 'toys' or how much material wealth that we acquire but from the richness of the life experiences that we receive from others and can then pass on. This sharing, this connection, this flow of life can be found in the legacy of Professor Presas and his art. I know, because I was able, in my small way, to be a part of it and will continue to be forever grateful for it. I will always try to reflect that spirit of wisdom as it shines from the candle that lights our way. Thank you Professor and thank you all for making a memorable Arnis experience possible."

"Being that this was my first camp I have very little to base a comparison on. Though I do not believe it takes a seasoned veteran to feel the energy and see the fun everyone was having. I know we all had lots to work on, especially us new people, but all of the instructors were friendly and went out of their ways to help us. It was great meeting the Masters of Tapi-Tapi, high ranking black belts, and every participant at the camp. I personally had an awesome time and can't imagine a better first camp."
