2nd Annual Toronto Camp Whitby, ON, Canada August 27th & 28th 2011 Instructors: Chuck Gauss & Ken Smith Camp Host: Brian Johns
We quickly settled in the camp routine of Master Smith and Master Gauss taking turns teaching various aspects of the fascinating art of Modern Arnis, mixing in their humor and stories about Professor. A wide variety of Modern Arnis concepts and techniques was covered at the camp including but not limited to tapi tapi, sinawali boxing, pressure points, joint locks, ground defenses, counters to common throws/sweeps, traditionals, knife drills, rolling drills, and self defense techniques. A number of people commented on the seamless of instruction from Master Chuck and Master Ken as the camp progressed. Master Chuck and Master Ken did an amazing job of teaching in a way that everyone, from beginners to advanced, could benefit. We had a Filipino dinner served during dinner break of the camp. The fare included chicken adobo, spring rolls, kare kare, cassava cake, pansit (noodles), embutido (steamed meat loaf). steamed rice and a lechon! Many thanks to George Gonzales for his Lechon contribution! I would also like to thank Terence and his wife (Christy) and his wonderful parents for cooking and bringing in Filipino food and helping with the serving. It was fitting that we had the Filipino dinner in honor of the country from which the art of Modern Arnis originated. It was FANTASTIC! On Sunday August 28th, we had a moment of silence in memory of a legend, our teacher, and the founder of the art of Modern Arnis, Professor Remy A. Presas. It was observed that while he may not be with us physically, his spirit was very evident and much alive through Master Chuck and Master Ken through the course of the weekend. We had an emotional closing ceremony with the memory of Professor Presas very much in our minds and departed as friends and vowing to renew our ties next year.
