Michigan Summer Camp 2010 Detroit, MI June 24th to June 27th 2010 Camp Host: Chuck Gauss
For as long as most people can remember the Michigan Modern Arnis Camp has been one of the premier camps running continuously for over twenty years. This camp has traditionally been exciting for beginners and advanced martial artists. Master of Tapi-Tapi Chuck Gauss has run Michigan Camp for the last few years. Amazingly, each year the camp seems to get better and better, this is due to the commitment of Master Gauss to his promise to continue to teach Professor’s art, as he would have. This year Michigan Camp had a theme. It was very apparent that in order to succeed at Modern Arnis and better your skills you must be inspired. Master Gauss spent time planning a camp that would inspire people. He gathered a teaching staff second to none for this year. People were treated to the teachings of Master Ken Smith and Master Brian Zawilinski. Each of them shared their knowledge gained by years of experience from personal training with Professor. When you thought that the teaching could not get any better you were treated to Master Earl Tullis and Master Roland Rivera. These two instructors have a passion for Modern Arnis that is easily apparent when you observe them instructing a group. Watching Roland move excited everyone to improve their footwork. Earl was able to show how effective Modern Arnis could be when you concentrate on the details. Master Gauss arranged a special session with his Jujitsu instructor, Tyrone Gooden. Working together Chuck and Tyrone were able to demonstrate how similar Jujitsu is to Modern Arnis. The main point that Tyrone made was to have a technique be effective you must eliminate all the extra space. Tyrone was able to demonstrate his theory, most painfully on his student who was kind enough to demonstrate technique for the group. Saturday was one of the best days of the camp. During the afternoon session Guro Brian Johns who tested for Lakan Apat treated the group to a demonstration of skill. Everyone in attendance sat in awe as Brian demonstrated his speed, knowledge and skill. He certainly set the bar high for anyone testing after him, it was apparent that Modern Arnis is a highly effective self defense. Saturday night there was a self-defense competition held. It was also a spectacular demonstration of skills. All the participants certainly were able to clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of Professor’s art. It was very difficult for the judges to pick a winner, Barbara Rolls – First Place, Dan Pocock – Second Place and A.J. Ellwein – Third Place. Congratulations to all who participated in the competition. As always camp could not have been such a huge success without the commitment of everyone who attended. Thanks to all the Masters for their hard work at camp and during the year sharing their knowledge. Congratulations to Guro Brian Johns for his great fourth degree demonstration and Promotion. Congratulations to Nick, Keith and Terrance for their rank promotions. Keep training, teaching, attending camps and most important ----- make Professor proud, REMEMBER TO BE INSPIRED.
