Arnisfest 2008 Orland Park, IL October 2nd to October 5th, 2008 Camp Host: Master of Tapi Tapi Ken Smith
It is hard to believe that another IMAF, Inc. camp season has come to a close. The final event of the year was held at Ken Smith’s Islander’s Karate in Orland Park Illinois. The studio had all the right touches to make you feel at home while reminding you of Professor Presas. The training as always was second to none. The Masters each would teach a portion of each session, it was amazing how everything they did just flowed right into the next Master’s session, this teaching method kept things fast paced and exciting for all participants. At this camp we were treated to the teachings of Will Higginbotham, a longtime student of Professor Presas, Wally and Leon Jay as well as George Dillman. He was able to put all these arts together easily and demonstrate that “it is all the same” As always there were veterans and first time camp attendees. No one left with out picking up something new from every session. The Masters and senior black belts were very attentive and helpful when drills were being done. They made every effort to ensure that everyone understood as much of the concepts being presented as they could based on their experience. Everyone was encouraged to go back home and begin teaching Professor’s art. It was mentioned by all the Masters that teaching would help people to understand a concept and make it their own. There was a major emphasis on conditioning as well as the finer points of technique. Master Gauss lead a fantastic workout session complete with a series of drills and crunches that made everyone remember they needed to keep up on their ab workouts. It was clear that the Masters are taking their job of spreading Professor’s art very seriously. The Saturday evening session ended a little early to allow people to clean up and attend a gathering at the home of Master Smith and his lovely wife, Tammy who had a large selection of delicious food for people to enjoy. It was amazing how easily you felt at home. Everyone had a fantastic time telling Professor stories and getting to know each other better and watching fights on television. Sunday morning was a very special session, unfortunately due to travel plans the group had gotten a little smaller. For the lucky people who did not have to travel early were treated to some individual attention from Master Smith. He ran the group through a series of techniques that he does not have the chance to work with a large group. This special training is a great reason to be sure not to miss the last session of a camp. The camp ended with the traditional circle of friends. As camp ended, I wished time could stand still and we could train for a while longer. It felt like it would be such a long time before we could feel the energy and spirit of Professor. Each camp has it’s own special energy brought out by the people who attend and the teacher’s who share with all of us. This camp was no exception, Masters Smith, Gauss and Ladis did the memory of Professor Presas proud by teaching his beautiful art.
